On March 25, 2024, the Department of Transport Systems at the Institute of Transport organized a seminar. During the event, we had the privilege of hosting Professor Jan-Dirk Schmocker from Kyoto University, who delivered a lecture titled Utilizing Crowdsourced Data for Travel and Activity Estimation. Following that, Professor Piotr Sawicki presented his paper titled Measuring Transport Exclusion - Practical and Methodological Insight. Both presentations garnered significant interest from both students and faculty members alike.

Invitation to the Professor’s Jan-Dirk Schmöcker lecture
We invite you to a lecture by Professor Jan-Dirk Schmöcker entitled: “Utilising crowdsourced data for travel and activity estimation”. The lecture will be held on Monday, March 25 in room 101, building A5. Start at 11:45 AM.
Prof. Jan-Dirk Schmöcker is an Associate Professor within the Department of Urban Management at Kyoto University. He has published numerous papers as well as co-edited a book titled “Public Transport Planning with Smartcard Data”. He has been involved in numerous international projects, among others, he is currently the PI of a JST and EU co-funded project titled “Deep Learning of Anticipated Urban Mobility Peaks”. In 2022 he received the JSCE “International Activity Cooperation Award” for his contributions to the Japanese Civil Engineering Society. A major longstanding research topic of his is modelling of passenger behaviour in public transportation networks including aspects such as fare structures, crowding, bunching and real-time information. Jan-Dirk’s current research interests further cover the usage of crowdsourced data for understanding travel behaviour in general and urban tourism in particular. The overall motivation is to induce more sustainable travel patterns within cities and to stimulate a discussion on “transport sufficiency”.
The lecture will be held as part of the seminar of the Department of Transport Systems of the Institute of Transport, which will also include a speech by Dr. Piotr Sawicki entitled “Measuring transport exclusion – practical and methodological insight”.
Cooperation agreement on the Operational Planning Model for Public Transport
We are pleased to announce that on January 31, 2024, an agreement was signed between the Poznań University of Technology and the Poznań Public Transport Authority, the Project Coordination and Revitalization Office of the City of Poznań, the ITS Polska Association - SmartCity Lab and PTV Mobility Poland sp. z o.o. in the field of building an operational traffic model that integrates many data sources in the VISUM software, including timetable data saved in the GTFS standard, data from the automatic passenger counting system as well as data from the electronic ticket system. The experimental field will be the area of the City of Poznań (in the transportation model). The aim of the project will also be to prepare a methodology for building a standard planning operating model for a medium-sized city.
